In the dimly lit tavern of Saltwater, only two patrons lingered at the tavern's counter while the owner lounged by the cupboard. They'd already had a few rounds, and their conversation grew more animated. "My friend, did you hear Villanelle's back? Folks on the trade routes are jittery, fearing our goods might catch her eye..." The talkative customer looked every bit the desert merchant. Laden with a pack, they were cloaked in robes and veils, revealing brief glimpses beneath the fabric with each sip of their drink. "You mean that thieving woman?" scoffed the man in tattered military garb. "She wouldn't bother with your measly goods, trust me. Stop poking around!" "So... you've crossed paths with her?" The merchant grew animated and leaned in eagerly, only to spot the stained weapons concealed in the man's sleeves. They fell silent momentarily, then rasped to the tavern owner, "Two more drinks!" As the tavern owner served the drinks, the merchant pushed them toward the man, cautiously asking, "How could a woman like her stoop to such dirty work? With her looks, she could have the world. After all, they say Villanelle's skirts are the most vibrant roses in the desert." "Roses have thorns. They say her skirts hide a scorpion's tail, lethal and unseen," the man retorted. "But...wouldn't she take jobs for the right price? Maybe we could wine and dine her with a fat purse..." The merchant fumbled nervously, inviting mockery from the man, "Villanelle isn't in it for the cash. She's a cold-hearted operator! Don't kid yourselves!" The man paused, then added, "But if you're after the Quicksand Claws' loot, she might bite." "I don't want to tangle with those..." The merchant lowered their voice, "those lunatics..." For traders of the Scorched Expanse, the Quicksand Claws were the stuff of nightmares. The merchant choked back a gulp, growing wary of the man. "Does Villanelle have a score to settle with them?" "There's some bad blood there! The Quicksand Claws have been hunting her for years, but she's a slippery one. They've never laid a finger on her!" The man took another swig. "What did she do to earn their wrath...?" the merchant pondered, meeting the man's sharp gaze with a shiver and quickly signaling for two more drinks. The man drank deeply, his demeanor softening. "Word is, she raided the Quicksand Claws' prized cargo. That hit 'em where it hurts!" "What kind of cargo is worth such a grudge?" The merchant's eyes gleamed. "Girls. Young ones. That's their idea of treasure." "The Quicksand Claws would stoop as low as Rustport?" The merchant spat. "Shh, keep it down!" The man glanced around, then continued, "It caused a stir. For years, no one's known where she stashed those girls!" "Why would she... take them?" The merchant was perplexed. "Who knows! Maybe she was one of them once, captured by the Quicksand Claws. She doesn't want others to suffer like she did!" The merchant fell silent, their revulsion palpable. "Those vile Quicksand Claws..." "Let's just say they picked the wrong fight! Ever since, any deal involving the Quicksand Claws, she disrupts... They've bled coin trying to capture her! And when they send men after her... well, you can imagine..." "Wow, how do you know all this?" "Heh, ever wonder how I got these scars?" The man adjusted his stance, revealing bloodstains beneath his uniform. He massaged his swollen arm, grimacing in pain. "If I ever see that thief again, she'll regret it!" As night edged closer, the merchant gathered their belongings, swaying as they rose and offering the man's shoulder a friendly pat. "Tonight's on me, pal. Thanks for the scoop on... Villanelle." The man waved the merchant off, seemingly unimpressed by the gesture. The merchant grinned, tossed a handful of coins onto the counter, adjusted their robe, and sauntered out the door, leaving the tavern owner pleased. Suddenly, the man felt a sharp pain in his chest and then collapsed onto the counter. Amidst the tavern owner's horrified cries, the man's gaze fixed on the door, where a scorpion's stinger retracted into the merchant's robe...
