How many days had Cassius been locked in solitary confinement? When his family came to visit, their voices outside his cell seemed completely out of place, a drastic change from the usual silence. It was only when they handed him the pen and paper he'd requested that Cassius' eyes finally took on some light. For generations, Cassius' family had served as historians, recording the story of the Draconis since antiquity. The most outstanding of his family had also long served as scribes for the Council of Elders, maintaining accurate records of each decision reached at Council meetings. Cassius was among the elites, who could fulfill two roles as both historian and scribe. Committed to documenting the present and gazing back at the past, Cassius was proudly loyal to his family, aspiring to be the best scribe not only of his family, but of all Draconis. But everything changed that day. Hildwin, Elder of the Bloodridge tribe, called a meeting of all Draconis Councilmen. As the scribe, Cassius recorded the proceedings. Faced with a massive invasion of Hypogeans, Esperia had been thrown into peril. Hildwin proposed to join arms with humans to resist the Hypogeans, and grant humanity Draconis Gems. The resolution was passed, but many Elders expressed an aversion to humans. This puzzled Cassius, until Hildwin revealed to him an unfortunate past that had not been recorded—not even at the Wyrmscale Sanctuary: the dragons had once been enslaved by the lowly humans. Only then did Cassius understand the Elders' misgivings; they feared that humanity would betray them once again. Every time Cassius recalled that moment, it was as if his pride in his heritage had been ripped to pieces. While he was shocked to learn of his bloodline's past humiliation, what made him even more upset was that the history his family had worked so hard to compile for generations was not entirely true. Cassius returned home to inquire with his seniors, only to be told that this "secret" had been kept in his family since antiquity. At this, Cassius' faith in the discipline of history collapsed. He could not tolerate deception in the histories to which he'd devoted his life! Cassius resolved to revise the historical documents and set the record straight. The seniors of Cassius' family opposed his idea. For them, the glory of the Draconis must not be tainted, and any record of their humiliation must be sealed away in perpetuity. Cassius understood their concern, but he had already made up his mind. Even if it would destroy his career, Cassius believed that his fellow Draconis deserved to know the truth. Cassius was unable to persuade his seniors, however. Fearing that he might expose the forbidden history, the family seniors locked Cassius in solitary confinement. They thought that Cassius had merely strayed from the path, and would change his mind with only a few days of isolation. They were steadfast in their efforts to prevent Cassius from sullying the honor and status that their family had gained over generations. Refusing to acquiesce, Cassius dug in his heels with a hunger strike. Cassius' family was pained as the light grew dim in his eyes and his body wasted away, but no matter how they argued, Cassius refused to compromise. After many, many days, Cassius finally spoke up, asking for a pen and paper. He wanted to contact Hildwin directly. If he could not gain Hildwin's approval, Cassius was willing to give up on making the hidden history public; he would keep the secret and take that history to his grave. Cassius' family agreed to this request, believing that only Hildwin could persuade Cassius to abandon his plans to publicize their history of humiliation. It was only several months later that Hildwin arrived to Cassius' cell. The young historian was only skin and bones by that time, but his eyes were as resolute as ever, and Hildwin was at once surprised and filled with pity. The two held a long discussion, during which Hildwin eventually agreed to Cassius' plan. Having traveled Esperia extensively, Hildwin knew that the only way to avoid past mistakes was to learn from history. Hildwin was impressed by Cassius' persistence, which demonstrated the vigorous determination of the younger generation. Hildwin released Cassius from confinement and promised to support his revision of the histories. Returning to work, Cassius found himself sleepless. He knew that once made public, the new histories would cause an uproar across Dragon Isle. He would most likely be publicly derided as well, but even if it would cause him to become an outcast, Cassius still believed that the revised histories would set the Draconis on a path to greater glories. Cassius will never relent on his mission to pursue truth. His writing hand will continue to carve the truth upon the wheel of time.
