An empire's path to glory is littered with the destroyed remnants of contenders. So it was with the Kingdom of Ozmanth, and Olgath the heir to its throne. There was indeed a time before the Lightbearer Empire dominated the lands of humanity with an iron fist—a time of brief heydays for humanity's lesser kingdoms before absorption into the behemoth of the empire. And so it was that the borders of the Lightbearer Empire encroached upon the otherwise peaceful kingdom of Ozmanth. The Lightbearer Empire sent envoys of peace, as always, to discuss the terms of their "new arrangement." The proposal? Incorporation into the empire as a somewhat autonomous duchy. For the empire this was already concession enough. Yet it was far from enough for Osmanth's king, Olgath's father, in recognizing the worth of that which his kingdom had built. He politely sent the emissaries away with eloquent words as to his hope of an enduring peace between their peoples. But the kindly words concealed a darker reality to the increasingly terrified subjects of Ozmanth: when a far mightier power seeks a "new arrangement," the terms of such an arrangement can be executed unilaterally. Rumors of a conflict with the mighty Lightbearers—or worse, war—drove the court into a panicked frenzy. There was already dissatisfaction with the king's rule. The fear of war added irresistible weight to forces calling for a change in government. It was Olgath's own uncle, General Roman, who ultimately plunged the dagger into his brother's back. He then naturally followed through with the execution of all other potential heirs within the family tree. His dagger reached far and wide, ultimately leaving only Olgath himself the sole survivor of his line. And what had the new king of Ozmanth gained for his treachery? An honorific position dependent entirely on his utter subservience to Ozmanth's new Lightbearer masters. Olgath survived. His sister almost survived. In fact, it was the bullet meant for Olgath that had left him severely wounded which killed his sister. She, like so many others loyal to the Palace, had died fighting the betrayer. Olgath fled, a shadow of his former self, his life's mission totally concerned only with revenge against Roman. But the boy had no army, not even the full functionality of his limbs. Crippled by the bullet that had killed his sister, Olgath was reduced to hunting for scraps in the ruins of border towns. On the rare occasion he encountered another living soul in the same predicament, he was often reduced to being shooed away like the helpless scavenger he now was. His waking life tortured him, and then his dreams tortured him again at night as he consistently beheld the same vision: a variation on his father and sister accusing him of failing to right the wrongs they had suffered, or the sight of Roman once again raising the barrel of a gun toward his family, who yet again fell to the ground lifeless. The details varied, but the theme remained. Olgath felt his mind splintering away into nothingness. And it was in the depths of absolute despair, when his soul was radiating the darkness of the Eternal Abyss, that he drew the attention of other, less natural creatures like a moth to a flame. And so it was that the Hypogeans came to Olgath's aid. The night had begun as any other with the same nightmare. But this night he did not dream alone. A slithering maggot-like creature twisted and crawled over the rubble, then climbed and slithered into the wound in the palm of his hand. The dream experienced an abrupt change of tone. Instead of Roman pointing the gun at his family and mowing them down like criminals, this time it was Olgath who blew Roman to smithereens—with nothing less than a powerful hand-held cannon shaped oddly like a maggot. Thereafter he began to dream that the cannon, or rather the maggot that had transformed itself into a cannon, was watching him intently. Some kind of spine-curdling fluid or emulsion sprang forth from the creature and enveloped Olgath within his dream. And then he began to hear strange whispers, barely yet somehow understood, that asked him whether he was willing to give everything he had to right the wrongs done to him. The next morning he awoke a changed man. He could scarcely believe what had happened overnight—his wounds, pain, and withered limbs were suddenly restored to their former vigor. Moreover, he was holding in his hand the same cannon that he had beheld in his dream. He was not just restored. Olgath had been given a power greater than his human body had originally possessed. It was most welcome, but like all Hypogean gifts were not for free—he would need to earn it through a sacrifice as bitter as his desire for revenge. And so Olgath the butcher was born that day. He quickly began his work of vengeance upon all those who had deprived him of his just desserts, starting with the annihilation by cannonfire of the other scavengers that had mocked him previously. Olgath emerged from the ruins a man triumphant, growing daily in added strength. With these newfound powers, all Olgath had to do was wait for the perfect moment to enact his revenge. Although just a figurehead, Duke Roman was still a well-guarded man. It took many moons for Olgath to locate his opportunity. The wretched traitor who had exchanged the lives of Olgath's family members for the comforts of a palatial estate was to attend the citywide celebrations as the guest of honor. The ideal moment to blast the duke would come during the cannon salute during the procession. The streets that day bustled with excited revelers. Olgath wasted no time appreciating the celebratory atmosphere. Instead he retreated to the shadows as his scowling thoughts turned to former days when he had attended the same event with his beloved family, not as an assassin. From the dark he gazed toward the likely point of arrival of the duke's grand procession. At last he saw Roman, his own uncle, the one who had stripped Olgath of all happiness in life, seated high upon the main carriage and waving with blissful ignorance at the crowd cheering with adulation. The sight was so disgusting to Olgath. He could think only of the bullet that had nearly lodged itself in his heart. Roman's procession neared. Olgath waited. The cannon salute began. There was an ear-splitting blast, so deafening only nearby onlookers noticed the shell aimed at the Duke's own entourage. There were screams. The crowd scattered. Olgath mowed down the last guards and then stood face-to-face with his arch-enemy. The terror on Roman's face was palpable. He began by pleading with Olgath to spare his life and launched into a long-winded explanation of why he had had no choice. Olgath paid him no heed. He pressed the barrel to the duke's temple—the better to give the duke an experience of what it means to know the minute of your own death. Olgath returned to his home among the ruins and kneeled down in exhaustion. His life's last wish had been granted. At the moment he had found ecstasy beyond comprehension, followed almost as quickly by a profound sense of emptiness. His body had also began to wither once again. Olgath began to think that perhaps his bargain with the Hypogean was done, who had now come to remove the unnatural vitality once granted. But Olgath's suspicions were too simplistic. A Hypogean could never be satisfied by the mere ruin of an individual soul. More would be required. Again Olgath heard the sweet, low murmur by his ear claiming Roman had been nothing but an insignificant pawn in the grand scheme of a much more evil empire. It was in fact the Lightbearer Empire Olgath should recognize as his true nemesis and author of all his woes. Olgath's despairing heart was quickened once again by the excitement of hatred. The Hypogean's poisoned words burrowed deep within his heart as the cannon began to pulsate with a new, disgusting fluid that spread down Olgath's arm and across his whole body. For this next task the Hypogean and Olgath must become one. Olgath stood up from his place among the ruins, tightly clutching a cannon within a barely-recognizable hand encased in bone. It was time to display the powers of this weapon to the whole Empire. "Cannon fire is a beautiful candle that flickers but for a moment. So is life."
