Profile

Mehmed II, commonly known as "The Conqueror", was an Ottoman sultan. Most famous for conquering Constantinople, he also consolidated and expanded the Ottoman Empire with a military campaign into Asia and Europe. Mehmed conquered the Byzantine capital of Constantinople in 1453, then rebuilt it into the prosperous Ottoman capital of Konstantiniyye (now known as Istanbul). His next goal was to create a world empire centered around his new capital. The sultan continued in his conquests, reunifying Anatolia and pressing into Southeast Europe as far west as Bosnia. He also developed the Janissary infantry corps—children taken from their families and raised to be elite soldiers. The Janissaries were granted considerable salaries and social prestige to ensure their loyalty to the sultan. Mehmed was a proponent of religious freedom and emphasized the importance of justice for all. During his reign, mathematics, astronomy, and Muslim theology in the Ottoman Empire reached their zenith. Today, Mehmed is considered a hero in Turkey and parts of the wider Islamic world.
