Profile
Yahya ibn Khalid (c. 740-805) was one of the most influential political figures during the height of the Abbasid Dynasty. A key member of the Barmakid family, who were originally Buddhist leaders from Balkh in modern day northern Afghanistan, he rose to great power under the Abbasids after Islamic conquest. Having entered the royal court at a young age, Yahya became tutor and advisor to prince Harun. After Harun claimed his title as Harun al-Rashid in 786, he named Yahya grand vizier with full authority over all branches of government. With immense powers vested in the vizierate, Yahya was even reportedly given the caliphal seal. Along with his sons al-Fadl and Ja'far, Yahya governed with diligence and was known for his patronage of scholars. Expending massive efforts to facilitate the translation of various Greek and Indian sources to Arabic, he was a major contributor to the centuries-long Translation Movement and considered a founding figure of the Islamic Golden Age. By 803, the Barmakids had lost the favor of Harun al-Rashid; the family fell into disgrace, Ja'far was executed, and Yahya was imprisoned along with al-Fadl. Following the death of Yahya ibn Khalid in prison in 805, the glorious reign of the Barmakids thus ended.
