Profile

Hannibal Barca was a legendary Carthaginian general who lived during the Roman Republic's rise to supremacy in the Mediterranean. As a youth, he swore to his father that he would never be a friend of Rome. Hannibal underwent rigorous military training from an early age, which contributed to his outstanding success as both a military leader and a diplomat. He remains a key figure studied by military strategists today. During the Second Punic War, Hannibal marched an army which included war elephants across the Pyrenees and into Italy. Despite significant losses during the crossing, he won three major victories (at Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae) over the Romans, demonstrating his strategic brilliance, particularly in the areas of military intelligence, troop formations, and diplomacy. Now fully aware of the threat on their doorstep, Rome began to shy away from direct conflict with Hannibal's army. Rome quickly strengthened its alliances and began using scorched-earth tactics to limit Hannibal's supplies, as well as expanding its army and studying Hannibal's guerilla tactics. Eventually, Roman forces were able to retake key territory in the south of Italy. In 204 BC, Scipio Africanus launched an invasion into Carthage, and Hannibal was forced to return to Africa. At the Battle of Zama, in 202 BC, Scipio defeated Hannibal
