Profile
Ishida Mitsunari was a 16th-century Japanese daimyo of the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Born "Sakichi", he was a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the de facto leader of the "Western Army" that fought Tokugawa Ieyasu for control over Japan at the Battle of Sekigahara. Ishida Mitsunari was born in Ōmi Province to Ishida Masatsugu, a samurai. The younger Ishida later married Kogestu-in, the daughter of a prominent Toyotomi clan vassal. He first rose to prominence when he served three cups of tea (sanken-cha) to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the imperial regent and de facto ruler of Japan. The young man so impressed Hideyoshi that he took Mitsunari into his service. Mitsunari was later appointed as one of the "Five Commissioners" (go-Bugyō), becoming Hideyoshi's right-hand man. He became known for his virtue and resourcefulness, but also his unbending nature. Hideyoshi died in 1598, and was succeeded by his son, Toyotomi Hideyori. Court politics became divided between Toyotomi loyalists and the forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Hideyoshi's ambitious former vassal. In 1600, this struggle came to a head at the Battle of Sekigahara. Mitsunari led the "Western Army" of Toyotomi loyalists, but was defeated in the battle by Ieyasu's "Eastern Army". On November 8, 1600, at the age of 40, Ishida Mitsunari was captured and beheaded. The Toyotomi clan did not long outlive him, beginning the 250-year rule of the Tokugawa shogunate.
